ON SELF CARE…

ON SELF CARE…

For pretty much my whole life, bar the last year or so, I have felt that “self care” is a dirty word, (well phrase perhaps!). It made me feel uncomfortable, and I would always feel guilty about doing ANYTHING for myself – a yoga class, pedicure, sleep in, whatever it was that wasn’t directly helping someone else, or working towards a goal. #WTF? After falling down so many times that I realised perhaps it was more than a lack of tying my shoelaces up correctly (metaporically speaking!) I finally got it. When they ask you on an aeroplane to “fit your own Oxygen mask first”, they do so because if you aren’t breathing, how on earth can you help anyone else? As a mum, as a woman, as a wife, it can be extremely hard to find the time to do something for yourself on the odd occasion, let alone daily!!! BUT, I want to put it out there to start a daily ritual, something just for YOU, that is non negotiable. This is perhaps easier if you are waiting on your little one to come earth side, perhaps harder to do if you already have gaggles of kiddies running around your ankles. BUT, it’s a practice I have started many months into being a mum of 2, and I feel like most of the time, i’m a better person- mum, friend, wife, business person, when i’ve done something that fills my cup. I think the biggest barrier is that we assume it has to be a day at the spa, a night away, a massage, or something big to be of any significance – but it can be the smallest gesture to yourself, that makes the biggest difference.

I no longer feel guilty about attending a yoga class, going for a glass of wine with a girlfriend, or taking myself off for a long Sunday walk or run – because I come back with energy, enthusiasm and love in bounds. It might just be 5 mins to yourself to meditate in the morning, to get up 20mins earlier to jump around the loungeroom or do some yoga, it might be heading to bed early with a good book, making yourself a totally nourishing meal that has no food “rules” other than to be nourishing for your tastebuds, heart and soul (a current FAVE of mine). When we make it a small, but ritual dedication, and give back to ourselves daily, the ability to weather any storm suddenly seems easier, there’s more space between action and reaction (like a smile rather than a scream when you 11 month old tipd his entire bowl of porridge in your lap – may or may not have happened to me yesterday!), so GO ON, I DARE YOU, and then share with us by tagging #lennyroselovesmums, I can’t WAIT to see what you come up with and how you feel  🙂
